PRESS RELEASE

CENTRAL SAN DIEGO BLACK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOSTS LOCAL STUDENTS AT THE OLD GLOBE FOR RED VELVET PERFORMANCE AND BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR

CSDBCC PARTNERS WITH THE OLD GLOBE IN INSPIRING YOUTH THROUGH THE MAGIC OF LIVE THEATER

San Diego, CA – On Friday, April 21, 2017, the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce (CSDBCC) partnered with the Old Globe in hosting over 100 local high school, community college students, and educators for a performance of Lolita Chakrabarti’s Red Velvet, the critically acclaimed period drama that tells the story of Ira Aldridge, the trailblazing 19th century American Shakespearean actor who became the first Black man to play Othello on the English stage.

Prior to the performance, this diverse group of students from Lincoln High, La Jolla High, High Tech High, La Jolla Country Day, and Garfield High Schools, along with students from Mesa College, Southwestern College, Jack-n-Jill’s Links Youth Program, and University of California at San Diego also enjoyed a reception and an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Old Globe. For a number of participants, this event marked their first time experiencing the world-class excellence of one of San Diego’s most renowned cultural institutions, as well as their first exposure to the remarkable life and legacy of Ira Aldridge.

Made possible by the generous sponsorship of Ensunet Technology Group, JONES, NWB Environmental Services, LLC, and RHA Delivering Solutions, this youth-oriented engagement built on the momentum from CSDBCC’s participation in last month’s San Diego Black Renaissance Diversity and Inclusion Roundtable event, which brought a diverse group of African American leaders together at the Globe for a forward-thinking dialogue on diversity and inclusion in the theatrical arts. CSDBCC President and CEO, Dr. Steven Jones, joined the Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director, Barry Edelstein, and San Diego Black Renaissance Founder, Michael Taylor, in moderating this discussion on creative strategies for engaging more people of color—across all generations—in San Diego’s theater scene.

Mr. Taylor, a member of the Globe’s Board of Directors and President of NWB Environmental Services, was proud to sponsor CSDBCC’s Red Velvet event. “This production, and Ira Aldridge’s powerful legacy more specifically, exemplifies the many reasons why theater matters, and why diversity and inclusion matters,” said Taylor. He added, “CSDBCC has been a valuable partner in the Globe’s ongoing efforts to reach as many people as possible, including youth, through this enduring art form.”

Dr. Jones also noted, “CSDBCC is proud and excited to partner with the Globe and our sponsors in bringing Ira Aldridge’s incredible story of resilience and excellence to a new generation of trailblazers and proponents of the arts here in San Diego. The Black Chamber is committed to forging strong community partnerships across all sectors of San Diego, including the arts and education sectors.
