Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Lifetime Contributions of William D. Jones at Sold-Out 6th Annual Fundraising & Awards Gala

San Diego, December 15, 2016: On Saturday, Nov. 19th, 2016, the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce (CSDBCC) presented William D. Jones, Director, Sempra Energy and President/CEO of CityLink Investment Corp. and City Scene Management Co., with the Lifetime Leadership Award at its 6th Annual Fundraising and Awards Gala, which took place at the U.S. Grant Hotel in Downtown San Diego.

In drawing its inspiration from “Classic Motown,” one of the most distinctive musical sounds and successful Black-owned and Black-centered businesses in U.S. history, this sold-out, black-tie affair celebrated community, business, and youth leaders who epitomize Motown’s trailblazing excellence and transcendent success. “We were excited to build on the extraordinary success of last year’s Gala, which honored Jessie J. Knight, Jr.,” said CSDBCC Executive Vice President, Maxine Price. “This year’s Gala exceeded our expectations in generating widespread enthusiasm and support for the chamber’s new leadership and growth initiatives.”

This year, CW6 Reporter Phil Farrar returned as master of ceremonies and led CSDBCC in welcoming 36 honorary guests, including San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer; nearly 60 corporate and nonprofit sponsors, including title sponsor and Corporation of the Year Award recipient, SDG&E; and hundreds of local leaders and business professionals who joined in celebrating William D. Jones’ lifetime contributions to our city. “It’s hard to find anyone more respected and accomplished in San Diego than William Jones,” said CSDBCC Chairman Bruce Mayberry. “Mr. Jones is an engaged leader working brilliantly behind the scenes to make our city, state, country, and world a better place for all.”

Other honorees who exemplify the determined spirit of Motown and advance CSDBCC’s mission of creating generational wealth included Leon Williams, San Diego’s first Black Councilmember and Civil Rights trailblazer, who received the Humanitarian Award; Austin Martin, founder of the interactive, hip-hop based vocabulary acquisition program, Rhymes with Reason, received the Youth Entrepreneur Award; The LINKS Inc. was honored with the Community Service Award for its innovative and empowering LINKS to STEM program; and NWB Environmental Services, LLC, a cultural resource management firm at the forefront of drone photography, received the Small Business of the Year Award. As part of CSDBCC’s commitment to empowering youth through education and financial literacy, the chamber also proudly presented four deserving Black high school students with scholarships, which are funded by proceeds from the Gala.

In addition to celebrating these outstanding award recipients, newly appointed CSDBCC President & CEO, Dr. Steven Jones, CEO of JONES, introduced the Chamber’s new Executive Leadership Team, as well an ambitious 2017 Six-Step Growth Strategy, which aims to expand the CSDBCC’s mission and membership base to all sectors of San Diego. “CSDBCC is dedicated to becoming a Business Resource Center that works diligently to foster the success of Black Businesses and Chamber members throughout San Diego County. We know that when our members thrive, the San Diego Community thrives,” said Dr. Jones.
